Another Dog, Another Hero!

Good boy!

Man and his dog....a classic love story. Over the years, we have read the stories how dogs are used in detecting cancer in humans with an accuracy rate sometimes better than the most sophisticated hospital hardware; how dogs can sense when children are nearing epileptic seizure; how dogs can alert those with heart conditions of an impending attack.

It seems that in addition to their absolute unconditional love, these joyful creatures, these adored pets, cherished companions, four-legged members of the family, are able to save our life and save the life of those we love. This extraordinary sense, the Sick Sense, that dogs have does not necessarily involve special training. Sometimes, it just happens. But what a gift.

And so it happened in my house last night. While my father was finishing dinner, his dog, Agah, began barking. There was something different about his bark, different enough that I immediately returned to my dad's room even though I had just been in there not more than ten minutes earlier. My father was sitting in his Lazy Boy, right arm hanging over the side of the chair, eyes closed. "Dad, open your eyes," I said emphatically. Had it been later in the evening, I might have just covered his legs, lowered the sound on the TV, closed the door quietly and left him to nap til bedtime. "Dad, open your eyes!" His eyes remained closed but he mumbled something and raised his right
arm to his head. "Pain pill, please," is all I heard and in typical textbook fashion it was slurred. Dad was having a stroke. I immediately dialed 911 on my remote; recovering quickly, I got the phone, dialed 911. Help was on its way. One thing left to do was hug this bear of a dog and nose-to-nose just tell him thank you.

It's been less than 24 hours but Dad's doing really well. And the big guy in the picture is our hero!

Almost 5 years ago my border colli/german shepard mix alerted my husband that I was sick. It "looked" like a stroke, but no normal cause of stroke could be found. I was sent home after a night of observation. The dog still was on alert, when I got home he stayed near my bed room door for 2 days when another attack happened he again alerted my family. At the other hospital in my town they thought it was a stroke also but when the tests came back the same as the other hospitals. My husband and kids told the doc's that something was wrong, because Chief had said so. Eventually the diagnoseis came back as a medication reaction anti-depressants and migrain that are now known to be incompatable.

Chief who was formerly known as the chief of hospilaity is now the Chief of medicine

Good title! They're just amazing animals, full of surprises. I won't put any pressure on our dog, but I'm going to pay just a little more attention to him when he speaks!

What a wonderful member of the family. He saved your father's life, he must love you all very much. You are lucky to have such a fine companion for your father. I love dog stories, can you tell?

He truly did save Dad's life! I, too, am a sucker for dog stories. This particular one makes me really, really sappy. I have a huge family and of course everyone is calling asking about my dad♥ [nod to you, there] but their next comment is about Agah's incredible heroism!

Dogs are amazing creatures and are highly sensitive to changes. Before Austin passed away, he would come to me after each infusion and just love on me. He always sniffed my arm where the chemical was infused and then lay his head on me and whimper. Over the next few days as I was horribly sore, he would stay by my side the whole time.

They are amazing. There's another story today (I think) on the Vine about a dog who saved a life. There may be naysayers out there who call these feats just coincidence but you, me and thousands of others know better, don't we?

What a great dog! A real hero!

Good, boy, Agah! Good boy!

Dogs are just such amazing and noble creatures. They give us so much, and yet they ask for so little in return.

Those of us who live with our 4 legged brethren day in and day out KNOW when the bark sounds "Different"... the dog is saying "GET IN HERE.... YOU NEED TO CHECK THIS OUT!"

NOTE: I have a cat that will come in and check on me if I am making "noises" during the night (I have had a seizure disorder for over 5 years) and I am pretty sure that I am having minor seizures... but I have awoke to have my grey bobtail standing on my chest looking into my face as if to say "You ALRIGHT???"

Your father is lucky to have a guardian like AGAH!!!

Thank you for the article!!!

Nothing like having your dog eat the skin off of your face when your dead.

Sorry, but if my animals choose to snack on me after I am dead, and they are hungry, they are welcome to it. At that point, who cares?

And I so hope on the sad occasion when they inevitably pass, that in fact we will all meet in the afterlife with the rest of the family.
