Susan G. Komen: To give or not to give, that is the question

There are a few charities which I contribute to routinely.  Susan G. Komen is one of those charities.  But like most donors these past few days, I am questioning their "worthiness."   Some people have resolved to either continue giving, stop giving or start giving, depending upon the last day's news update:  Komen stops its funding to Planned Parenthood; Komen apologizes for stopping its funding to Planned Parenthood; Komen will allow Planned Parenthood to "apply" for grants....

If the matter weren't so serious it might be humorous; but cancer is serious, deadly serious, so there is no humor.  In the U.S., this year, approximately 40,000 women will die from breast cancer.

I was quick to defend Planned Parenthood and resolute to no longer contribute to anything Komen.  But yesterday, I received a request for a donation from Komen to,   "Take action against breast cancer this Valentine's Day."   Included in the package were brightly colored mailing labels with hearts and the words, Joy, Hug, Love, Kiss framing my name and address.   The postscript reads in part, "Send your gift now to help save lives."

But whose lives do they mean?  If Komen is aligning itself with the GOP, Evangelicals, A Million Moms, American Family Association, or any of the other extremist, anti-choice, anti-abortion conservative groups, then they don't want to save my life and they don't want to save the lives of men, women, families who rely on the services of Planned Parenthood.  And that means, to me, that Susan G. Komen may not be worthy of my donation.  There are other charities whose work equals Komen's in the fight against breast cancer.   For right now, despite personal misgivings and great disappointment, I'll donate to Susan G. Komen's current campaign and I'll support my family and friends in their pledge drives.   And Planned Parenthood has been put on my list.

A lot of damage has been done to the Komen brand.  Who knows if or when it can be undone.  Politicking is a dirty business; charities should not be.  The someecard.com message, above, is not funny; is it true?  We'll have to see.

I'm not at that point where I can cross Komen off my list. But it's empowering for all of us to know our voices can count.

We have already redirected our money to other cancer screening charities. We refuse to give any more money to SGK until they get rid of the fools on their board. I am not yet convinced that they will cease to be political.

Joanna,

I can understand your position and your choice. I donate to ACS and PP and that has made me feel that I have covered the bases that I choose to in the SGK arena so I am not having to change much to stay that way in the wake of the recent fiasco. Prior to the recent issue that choice was a matter of convenience for me; now, I probably would not add SGK to the mix based on trust issues.

Display and bloozbro, I have family members deeply involved in Komen fundraising. In part, my decision to support Komen's current campaign is based on that involvement. But in the future, I see little hope of my continuing support for Komen. DisplayName0, it is a matter of trust, isn't it? Hard to get that back.

I've heard people, mene and women who have been intimately involved in fund raising for komen, who have had breast cancer or a loved one or friend who has, and they have ALL said they would stop their support immediately.

I would say that until komen restores ALL PP funding, and not just funding to three of ninteen programs, AND the entire senior leadership resigns, all your and your family's support is doing is aiding a rightwing anti-woman agenda sponsored thru the latest rightwing pac.

Maybe you should start your own charity and see how many give to your cause. It's easy to pour on the criticism, just give to the charities you believe in and be done with it.

And I'm saying that if you concerned about women's health issues, and do NOT think they should be used as a rightwing political football, it is better NOT to give to komen until some RADICAL changes occur both in policy AND in senior staffing. Unless, of course, you SUPPORT putting rightwing ideology AHEAD of the health of women, then donate away.

I agree ryoushi. It seems Karen Handel should be the first to go.

So you have deciced that sgk only serves a right wing ideology and not chicks with breast cancer. Who knew that you had all the answers. So who should we give to ryoushi? Sure it won't support left or rightwing ideology. Or chicks with breast cancer.

Precisely. Their actions this past week made it clear that their organization is corrupted. That means that they need to admit that their organization is corrupted, apologize for it, and then clean house before they can even begin to claim that the corruption is gone.

Never will happen when the CEO and the managers take a very large percentage of the donations for their salaries, when they spend more of the donations to get more donations so that they can continue receiving their salaries why would they admit that they are only in it for the money?

It was not the public out cry about the defunding of PP that got them to change their minds it was when the corporate sponsor wanted to get out of their current contracts and told them that they will not be renewing their contracts that caused the SGK to change their stand.

The SGK will just try again to defund PP when no one looking.

3sheets, that brings up the matter of trust. Will you trust Komen to act in the best interest of all women in the future? I think the answer will be 'no' for millions of women. Seriously, Ari Fleischer interviewing Komen job candidates?

They also quit funding stem cell research so how serious can they be in wiping out breast cancer?

Stem cell research is a very valuable tool in cancer research so one has to ask themselves are they only in it for the money, and it does look like they care more about money then they do about the cause.

I won't be giving any money to them anymore. There are plenty of other cancer research groups in the country that I can donate my money to. Just because you don't give to Susan B. Koman doesn't mean that we don't want to find a cure for breast cancer.

Plus the overwhelming majority of their money goes to "education." And yet, I haven't heard of education programs for self breast exams, nutrition, or anything like that. My interpretation of Komen's educational programs = the pinkwashing of everything in sight. That is the main reason why I never have supported SGK.

The fact that they are not funding stem cell research, and flap over PP all shows me that they developed a political agenda.

      No that's win-lose.

Here's a better idea: don't give to the organization (SKG) that uses a faux religious/political agenda to determine what's good for women ... but please give to the organization (PP) that actually helps women with health issues

Giving to SKG is a losing game for millions of women seeking health care and treatment.

I'll give to ACS and PP, not SKG.

Personally I'll probably continue to support individuals I know raising money for SGK on a limited basis since I view it more as support for the individual than the charity in most cases, but my personal support will continue to be to organizations which hold more meaning to me like the Jimmy Fund, the MS society, and local charities.

As a cancer survivor and one who has lost several family members to cancer (most notably, my grandmother to breast cancer and my mother to bladder cancer), until Handel gets her ass fired, I will not donate another red cent to them. Even then, I doubt seriously I'll ever give them money again. ACS and PP all the way. Komen'll have a LOT of convincing to do to prove to everyone that they're no longer politicizing their "charity."

Michelle, Congratulations on being a cancer survivor. My mother also had/has bladder cancer but they caught it very early so she is doing well. Note to people reading this post...if it isn't your period or are past having your period (past menopause) and you see blood in your urine, go to your doctor right away.

I will continue to donate money to just about any foundation BUT Susan B. Koman.

I research my charitable giving and have learned that most companies doing the leg work for cash do so for some profit. Some may give higher percentages to those doing the actual work, some are better managed and have lower administrative costs which means more goes to the actual charity but I've found even with those, the executives are taking more salary than what I feel comfortable with.

My donations don't go through foundations at all - period, they instead go directly to those actually working on the solutions and providing the actual care. It takes a little more legwork to find them but for me that extra work is worth it knowing I've cut out a middleman.

I should my qualify my statement. There are plenty of good trusts and foundations out there doing good work. The convenience of giving to them is often easier than doing the legwork, it's better to give to them than not at all.
